Benefits of Magnesium
I talk a lot about how important Magnesium is and the different forms. The majority of us are not getting adequate magnesium, including many who already take magnesium supplements. There are three reasons for this: the amount of magnesium required by the body is greater than people think; fruits and vegetables have lost mineral content over time due to soil depletion; and some magnesium supplements are poorly absorbed by the body. Magnesium depletion can be caused by a number of stresses on the body, among them lack of adequate dietary magnesium; mental, emotional and environmental stressors; some drugs (diuretics, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, insulin, cortisone); heavy exercise; diabetes; gastrointestinal disorders; and excess calcium in the diet.
Also, magnesium levels in the blood can be skewed because the body ensures there is always an adequate amount of Mg in the blood as it pulls from the cells, so it's difficult to gauge proper levels throughout the body.
Epsom Salt is Mg Sulfate and is commonly used as a soaking solution for minor sprains, bruises, muscle aches, joint stiffness, and tired feet. Natural Calm is Mg Citrate and is used as a drink at night to 'calm' the nervous system and relax the muscles.
This Magnesium Bisglycinate is essential for more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body and doesn't require stomach acid for absorption - it passes into the cell via its amino acid transport, which means even those with poor digestion or absorption get the benefits ( makes it the most bioavailable). My focus was menstrual cramps and I have to say I started taking it two days prior to starting and I've had 0 cramps. Normally, the first night I don't sleep that great, feeling crampy and but last night I slept like a baby. Oh and because it supports muscle relaxation, was today.
Always start low and go slow. This brand is Metagenics, 100 mg, so I would suggest start around 50 mg at dinner and make sure you tolerate it. Try for a few days and increase to 100 mg. For PMS relief start it about a week before your period and monitor bowel tolerance.
